‘Pasty war’ fears over Greggs’ Cornish move
Residents of Cornwall have reacted in anger after Greggs, the bakery chain, opened its first branch in the county, prompting fears of a “pasty war”.
The company broke new ground in July by establishing its first franchised outlet in the county, at a service station in Saltash.
The shop does not offer pasties due to fears that it would upset locals. Instead it sells slices, sausage rolls, sandwiches and cakes.
Peter Williams, a councillor, said: ‘’They won’t succeed. Cornish people like Cornish pasties from Cornish companies.”
The Cornish Pasty Association, said: ‘‘The future of genuine Cornish pasties will not be compromised by a business selling other baked savouries.’’
