Time is running out for Labour centrists to make their move

-

SIR – Chuka Umunna is calling on Jeremy Corbyn to stop the Labour Party’s witch-hunt of moderate MPS (report, September 8).

He and his allies should have realised 18 months ago that the party had been infiltrated and taken over by an extreme Left-wing group. It is now not possible to dislodge them, and when the next general election is being fought the moderates will be de-selected, to the detriment of the party they have served for so long.

Mr Corbyn is being used by Momentum. I suspect he will be removed from his post in about a year’s time and replaced by a more ardent Left-wing leader, such as John Mcdonnell. So what do moderate Labour MPS do now – simply wait for this to happen, or move while there is still time for them to do something positive? Ken Suttleworth

SIR – Tony Blair regrets that Labour is now in the hands of the hard Left. He should remember that he is one of the main reasons why this is the case. He moved the party so far to the Right that there was no difference between Labour and the Conservatives.

Once people saw through him, and once his EU ambitions were thwarted, he ditched politics and used his international links to enrich himself. In doing so, he alienated everyone, including those who were once on his side within Labour. We can only hope that Mr Corbyn is sufficiently toxic to sink himself and those around him in due course. SIR – If Tony Blair seriously wants to reverse the hard-left takeover, all he has to do is express his wholehearted support for Mr Corbyn. Ian Barker

SIR – The Conservatives need to understand that the way to get younger people on board is to acknowledge that they are responding to the many excesses of crony capitalism. To insult their intelligence, as Andrew Roberts does (Comment, September 8) while making the tired old claim about politicised teachers, is counterproductive. When did teenagers believe everything that their teachers said?

When young people see a system that is working for everyone, it will be harder for them to challenge it. Robert Buss

SIR – Sir Vince Cable says Labour and the Conservatives are now run by extremists.

He may be correct about Labour – but the Tories? I can only assume that he is referring to the Brexiteer Tories who seek to ensure the full and proper implementation of a democratic vote. The express policy of Sir Vince and his party is to overturn the result of that vote. Who are the extremists, then? Kevin Weyman
