Speedy divorce

SIR – The proposed new divorce law (report, September 8) is designed to make the process easier.

In fact, divorce has not been onerous for the last 40 years, requiring two years apart by consent of both parties or five years apart without it. Yet this is now considered too slow.

When, as a bar student, I had to study Roman law, I learnt that divorce in ancient times could be achieved by simply staying away from the marital home for three nights and saying “I divorce thee” three times (in Latin, of course). Time to reinstate this? Peter Thompson
