Mead’s back in favour thanks to Thrones effect

-

Sales of the ancient brew of mead have tripled, thanks to the popularity of Game of Thrones, brewers say. Mead, made by combining honey and water, is said to be the first alcoholic drink recorded in history, dating back as far as 9000BC.

But the drink, which is produced in the West Country and is usually consumed in small quantities due to its rich flavour, is making an unlikely comeback.

Mead can range from 3.5 per cent to 20 per cent alcohol and was once enjoyed by the likes of Aristotle and Shakespeare. But its popularity decreased when cheaper alternatives such as wine and beer arrived.
