The composer and lyricist, added the Emmy to their Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards (Egot) to join the exclusive club of 15 people worldwide.

They followed fellow Britons Audrey Hepburn, who won posthumously in 1994, and Sir John Gielgud in 1991.

Lord Lloyd Webber and Sir Tim won the Emmy as, respectively, composer and lyricist of the musical, while American singer and producer John Legend joined the “Egot” club after playing the title role.

Lord Lloyd Webber said he was “honoured” to see the production recognised along with his “dear friend”.

Sir Tim said: “I’m amazed it stuck around 48 years.”
