Cook departs a hero

-

The prolonged standing ovation that greeted Alastair Cook’s century at the Oval yesterday was one of those “I was there” moments for the thousands at the ground. Their joy was shared by the entire country, whether fans of the game or not, for the achievement of a player who has set a fine example both as a batsman and an individual. At a time when sport often seems dominated by self-centred, loud-mouthed prima donnas, or macho posturers, Cook was the very model of propriety. As to his ability, his record – the most hundreds and the highest number of runs by an England player – speaks for itself. He is one of only five cricketers to score a century on their Test debut and in their final innings. For his demeanour and service to England as a captain and an opening batsman, he deserves the highest praise.
