Twelve O’clock High (1949, b/w) FILM4, 1.25PM ★★★★

 Gregory Peck is the commander assigned to straighten up a down-onits-luck heavy bomber squadron and send it into battle over Nazi Germany in this Oscar-winning film set during the Second World War. Veterans of the US Army’s Air Force’s daytime bomber campaign frequently cite this as the only Hollywood film to accurately portray their combat experiences. Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill and Dean Jagger co-star.

Runaway Jury (2003) FILM4, 6.25PM ★★★

 When her husband is shot in cold blood, his widow (Rachel Weisz) attempts to sue a gun manufacturer with the help of her idealistic lawyer (a brilliant Dustin Hoffman). But they find that there are those who will stop at nothing to bend justice for their own purposes. The film lacks the momentum of the bestselling John Grisham thriller on which it is based, and is often implausible, but remains an entertaining courtroom drama.

Shaun of the Dead (2004) ITV2, 9.00PM ★★★★

 Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s British zombie comedy, which pays homage to George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, is hilarious, smart and, towards the end, nail-bitingly tense. Shaun (Pegg), a Londoner in a dull job and a fractious relationship, finds his humdrum routine disrupted when almost everyone else in the country turns into a zombie. There’s a special geeky pleasure in spotting all the film buff in-jokes.
