WALDEN’S WORLD
Kate Beckinsale’s curious nail diet
Every man’s jaw hit their plate when Kate Beckinsale took her seat at our table at the GQ Men of the Year Awards last week; every woman began a forensic once-over.
Surely, if they looked hard enough a chink of imperfection could be found? Apparently not. Taut, tanned and clearer-skinned than a 20-year-old, the London-born 45-year-old really was cyborg-perfect up close. And funny to boot.
“Bet she doesn’t eat,” sniped one woman – which wasn’t entirely true.
The Underworld star didn’t touch the wine or even look in the general direction of the bread basket but she managed a few mouthfuls of her main course.
Still, it was Beckinsale’s approach to dessert that we all found most intriguing.
As the speeches went on, the actress began surreptitiously dipping a long painted fingernail into the panna cotta – before sucking the tiny scoop of sweet cream out from under it. Which reminded me of the “three-bite rule” Mary Berry once told me was the key to her svelte figure.
Although, of course, in Hollywood that rule looks more like: “If it can’t fit beneath a fingernail, it’s too much food.”
