sir – When John Mcdonnell, Labour’s shadow chancellor, announced his grand giveaway of company ownership to the workers (report, September 11), he was not asked from whom the shares would be taken, or whether he would compensate the existing shareholde­rs.

If the workers benefiting are in pension schemes invested in such companies, they may gain with the left hand and lose with the same left hand.

sir – Were a Labour government to pile on costs to companies, with “ownership funds” created to share profits, one assumes that workers would see their pay docked when there were no longer dividends from their company’s profits.
