To Sir with Love (1967)

TRUE MOVIES, 9.00PM ★★★★

 This good-hearted film follows out-of-work engineer Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier), who falls into a teaching post in London’s East End. To reach his disengaged students, Thackeray swaps curriculum and textbook for genuine human contact. While it’s a bit dated and a more than a tad mawkish in parts, Poitier’s outstanding performance ensures the film remains compelling over 50 years on. Look out for an appearance by Lulu.
