Proxy votes for MPS
SIR – One hundred years after the first women gained the right to vote, it is clear that many obstacles remain for women in politics. Being able to vote and represent their constituents should not be one of them. MPS are currently not entitled to any formal system of maternity or paternity leave and are forced to rely on the informal system of pairing votes.
Today, Parliament will debate proxy voting for MPS. A formal and transparent system of proxy voting would allow MPS to nominate a colleague to vote on their behalf if they were on baby leave and would guarantee the right of MPS’ constituents to have their voice and vote recorded in Parliament.
Parliament must show global leadership and be on the forefront of progressive, family-friendly working policies. We strongly urge MPS to support proxy voting in today’s debate and take this small but important practical step towards a more familyfriendly Parliament fit for the 21st century.
