Cable talks up potential of new centrist party

-

The Liberal Democrat party could change its name to attract Conservative and Labour MPS to join it under a new centre-left political movement, Sir Vince Cable has said.

The Lib Dem leader said he has held informal talks with 18 MPS – six Tory MPS and 12 Labour MPS – about creating just such a party.

“Some of them want to make a stand around social democratic values as they see it,” he said. “We have a role to work with them if it happens.”

Speaking to Chopper’s Brexit Podcast, which is available today on The Telegraph’s website, Sir Vince did not rule out changing the Lib Dem’s name to attract the new MPS.
