Research finds bacteria causes asthma in babies

-

A bacteria passed on in the womb can cause premature births and breathing problems that can lead to asthma, a study warns.

Babies born very prematurely are more likely to harbour Ureaplasma bacteria, which is present in the birth canal. The bacteria is unusually small and difficult to detect, but a widely-available antibiotic is effective against it and can be given safely to premature babies.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore believe the antibiotic should have a role in the treatment of premature babies and are planning a larger clinic trial.
