HENRY CAVILL, the British actor, has reportedly been dropped as Superman, with the studio deciding that a Supergirl film should be its biggest priority.

Cavill has played the superhero in three films, beginning with Man of Steel in 2013. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros has “shifted focus” to a film about the origins of Supergirl, another character in the DC Comics franchise.

The success of last year’s Wonder Woman film, which took more than £600million at the box office, demonstrated that there is an audience for female superheroes. Cavill’s agent said “the cape is still in his closet”, but Warner Bros did not deny that the actor’s run has come to an end.

The company said in a statement: “While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”

There is now expected to be a gap of several years before another Superman film is made.
