An end to ‘avocado hand’ with Tesco’s easy-peel variety

-

Avocados with easy to peel skin are to be sold in an attempt to prevent “avocado hand”.

Tesco will launch an avocado with a thicker, more easily peelable skin, which the supermarket claims could limit painful hand injuries from cutting into the fruit.

The hybrid variety, called Easyavo, is grown in South Africa by Westfalia Fruit, Tesco’s supplier, and comes away easily from its skin when cut in half, the supermarket claims.

It has a thicker and “corkier” skin, which gives it a shell-like appearance when compared to other popular varieties, Tesco said.

The fruit has gone on sale in selected stores to gauge its popularity, although it is more expensive than the standard avocado at £1.95.

Last year, Simon Eccles, a plastic surgeon, said avocados should carry warning labels after a rise in knife injuries from cutting into the fruit. Mr Eccles said he treated about four patients a week for such wounds, or as staff called the injury, “avocado hand”.
