French admit role in Algeria war torture

France admitted yesterday that it instigated a system that led to torture during Algeria’s 1954-62 war of independence.

Emmanuel Macron went further than any of his predecessors in recognising the scale of abuse by French troops. The president promised the widow of Maurice Audin, an independence activist, that France would open its archives on missing persons from the war.
