World says farewell to UN leader Kofi Annan

World leaders paid their last respects to Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary-seneral, at his state funeral in Ghana yesterday.

Annan died on Aug 18 in Bern, Switzerlan­d, aged 80. The grandson of tribal chiefs, he was the first black African to become UN leader and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. “Kofi Annan was courageous, speaking truth to power,” said Antonio Guterres, the current secretary-general.
