Tory discontent
sir – Patrick Evershed, president of the Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association (Letters, September 13), gives his full support to Theresa May and reports high levels of such support among his members.
I recently attended a local Conservative Association meeting to receive a briefing on Brexit and discuss the ramifications. The meeting was packed and the debate wide-ranging. After an hour, when all who wished to speak had done so, our MP asked: “Who has confidence in our Prime Minister?” Not one hand was raised. I understand there has been similar grassroots feedback nationwide.
Mr Evershed’s letter demonstrates the existence of the London and Westminster bubble – nothing more.

sir – Having been confined to a hospital bed for the past three months, I am concerned that my silence on Europe may have been misconstrued.
Twenty-five years ago, I set up the European Research Group. I still believe that Brexit means Brexit and that you cannot be half in or half out of the jurisdiction of the European Court. A majority of the British people knew all this before they voted to leave the EU. Lord Spicer

sir – Boris Johnson is reported (September 12) as saying that the Chequers proposal is “substantially worse than the status quo”.
Is this a guarded acknowledgement that the deal we already have is not that bad? Ron Stubberfield
