Waves of surfers tackling plastic

-

In the fight against plastic pollution, Surfers Against Sewage is aiming to clean 400 beaches and 60 rivers nationwide in a week next month. The Autumn Beach and River Clean starts on Oct 20 and it is hoped will be supported by some 15,000 volunteers.

Since its launch in 2011, the project has seen over 28,000 volunteers remove 80,000kg of marine plastic pollution at 932 Autumn Beach Clean events. Teaming up with British Canoeing, this year for the first time the group has introduced river cleans in a bid to stop plastic pollution before it reaches our coastlines.

The clean-up – the biggest of its kind in the country – will also provide valuable data on the range of bottles and cans collected in order to inform the Government’s decisions on a proposed deposit return scheme.
