Vicar steps in to save his own stalker from jail

-

 A vicar has shown compassion to a woman by asking for her not to be jailed again over an eight-year obsession with him, during which she sent him scores of letters.

Maureen Peace, 56, has already served two jail sentences for breaking a restraining order by bombarding the Rev Keith Rengert with unwanted letters, cards and gifts.

Norwich Crown Court heard she had sent another 87 letters between February and April this year to the vicar.

Mr Rengert, 52, said in a victim impact statement that her obsession was badly affecting him and his family.

He said he did not want to see Peace jailed again and only wanted her to stop sending letters to his home.

Judge Maureen Bacon agreed not to jail Peace again.

Instead, she varied the restraining order to allow Peace to send letters for him to a Diocese of Norwich office, rather than his personal address.

Judge Bacon also imposed a twoyear community order, with a mental health requirement.

Peace is already banned from going to any church service in which Mr Rengert is taking part.
