The Essex Serpent (2016)

The idea for this page-turning Victorian mystery came from a piece of 17th-century “fake news”: a pamphlet printed in London in 1669 that claimed a dragon-like creature was terrorising the townsfolk of Saffron Walden. Perry imagines a wave of panic in the 1890s, prompted by sightings of the long-forgotten beast.
