Force is with Vodafone’s 5G ‘Star Wars’ revolution

A HOLOGRAPHIC phone call was once the stuff of science fiction films, but yesterday Star Wars-style technology became reality.

The call was made by England and Manchester City women’s football captain Steph Houghton from Vodafone’s Manchester office, and she appeared as a live 3D hologram on stage in front of an audience 186 miles away at Vodafone’s headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire.

Using 5G technology, Houghton shared the stage with 11-year-old fan Iris, who was in Newbury in person.

The display, the UK’S first live holographic phone call, was conducted as Vodafone unveiled plans to roll out 5G telecom services to 1,000 sites across Britain by 2020.
