- By Laura Fitzpatrick

HE is the new director of the next James Bond film, the first American to direct the franchise and an unexpected choice to replace Danny Boyle after his surprise departure from the role.

Cary Joji Fukunaga may also hold the clue to answering the question on every fan’s lips: who will be the next James Bond?

For not only has Fukunaga worked with front-runner Idris Elba before, but he has proclaimed him “perfect” for the role.

“If they wanted him to play Bond, he could do it,” Fukunaga told The Telegraph in 2015.

“He’s suave, debonair, he can drive cars really well, he’s a gear-head, and he can do the action. I’m not sure how Monte Carlo would react to him, but that would be part of the fun.

“But I mean, I think Idris can pretty much do anything.”

The news of the 41-yearold’s appointment came in a tweet from Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

They said: “We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.”

Raised in California, Fukunaga is currently promoting his new Netflix show Maniac which stars Oscarwinning actress Emma Stone, and made his name directing Series 1 of HBO crime show True Detective.
