1977

Ian Mather, nine, was photographed for Birmingham Children’s Hospital being given Factor VIII treatment which may have been the contaminated with HIV.

1979

Aged 11, Ian was infected with Hepatitis C. Neither he nor his mother were told at the time.

1982

Ian found out he had HIV after his mother, Valerie, demanded the truth from the doctors.

Jan 1994

Ian become so unwell that he was forced to leave his job.

Feb 1994

After being nursed by his mother, Ian died as a result of HIV and Hepatitis C. Doctors told Ian’s mother that he had Hepatitis C by slipping it into conversation.

Sept 2018

Valerie Sanders spoke out ahead of an independent inquiry into the scandal. Preliminary hearings of the Infected Blood Inquiry will hear opening statements over three days.

Spring 2019

A full independent inquiry into the contaminated blood scandal will be held next year.
