Woman stabbed babies at maternity unit

A 52-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested at a New York childcare centre after attacking three babies and two adults with a butcher’s knife and a meat cleaver, stabbing them repeatedly.

The unnamed woman, who is believed to work at the centre, in Queens, was found unconscious in the building’s basement having cut her wrists. She was being treated in hospital yesterday, before being questioned. The victims were all expected to survive.

Reports suggested she first attacked a 31-year-old man, the father of one of the babies, at 3.45am, stabbing him in the leg. She then stabbed a nurse eight times and attack three children – all of them under a month old.

Lt Thomas Antonetti said the attack appeared to be in response to some sort of “psychological distress”.

A source told NBC News it was a maternity centre, where women could give birth – particularly if they wanted their children to be born in the US.
