Swiss voters reject ethical food changes

Voters in Switzerland have resoundingly rejected initiatives aimed at boosting local farming and promoting higher ethical and environmental standards in food production, amid fears of price rises and reduced consumer choice.

An estimated 62 and 70 per cent of voters respectively rejected the “Fair Food” and “Food Sovereignty” initiatives, after opponents warned that they could send prices spiralling, limit consumer choice and might violate Switzerland’s international trade obligations.
