New games in town

-

SIR – When my son was growing up, I spent years trying to stop him playing computer games. Now, 15 years later, he works in LA in the gaming industry.

In an effort to understand his career, I went to the new video games exhibition at London’s V&A. My eyes were opened. The dedication, creativity, ingenuity and technical ability of game-makers is extraordinary, and there is so much more to the new titles than the brash shoot-’em-up games which attract such negative publicity. The new generation is evolving at speed and exploring gender politics, gentler emotions and more thoughtful stories.

Anyone fearful of the effect of video games should spend an hour or two at this exhibition and hopefully come away sharing my optimism. Frances Hopewell-smith
