SIR – Many years ago my grandmother, then one of the few to have a telephone, rang her local grocery store.

The assistant answered with “Bugg of Bungay”, in the strong Norfolk accent (Letters, September 21). Grandmother misheard and, thinking a rude word had been used, gave the young man a quick telling-off. James Kendall
