Fearsome fighter

-

SIR – Regarding successful Second World War fighter aircraft (Letters, September 21), the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M “Zero”, designed by Jiro Horikoshi, of which over 10,000 were built, ought not be overlooked.

Between 1940 and 1943 it was able to outmanoeuvre all opponents in aerial combat, achieving an outstanding kill ratio, until new Allied tactics and equipment surpassed it.

Not as fast as the Spitfire, it could out-turn it with ease. With its unique flush rivets, it could sustain very steep, long climbs, and had a tremendous range of 1,600 miles. Roger Croston
