Lawyer played dead after island attack by two gunmen

-

A British barrister “played dead” to survive after she was shot five times in her car on a Caribbean island. She fears she was targeted because of her work.

Samantha Wright, 49, was left with bullets lodged in her spine, chest and liver after she was attacked by two men outside her home in Anguilla.

The shooting, on June 24, left her paraplegic and with a collapsed lung. Ms Wright, of Chittlehamholt, Devon, had been working as a criminal barrister on the British overseas territory since 2002.

The 49-yearold underwent surgery in the Cayman Islands but has now returned to the UK to receive treatment in North Devon.

Ms Wright said: “I didn’t know what to do so I just played dead until they had gone and then called the police myself. When I woke up in hospital I honestly thought I’d died.”

It is believed one man has been arrested.
