Soft pedalling

SIR – Philip Roe (Letters, September 25) rightly complains of the talking over the music in the BBC’S broadcast of highlights from the final of the Leeds Piano Competition. The amount of television time given to this major musical event is pathetic.

There used to be coverage on BBC2 of its early stages. This got whittled down, but until recently the final concert stages were broadcast live. Radio 3 does have coverage of earlier stages but people like to see competitors as well as hearing them.
