What to watch
Peston ITV. 10.45PM; STV, 11.05PM
Just two years after the launch of his new Sunday morning political discussion show, Robert Peston has moved to Wednesday nights – the day of Prime Minister’s Questions – as an alternative to Newsnight. Whether this incarnation of his series will prove any more successful is moot. The Andrew Marr Show trounced the BBC’S former economics editor’s vehicle in the ratings, once again establishing the BBC as first port of call for serious political analysis.
Peston has remained upbeat, claiming that “for those of you unaware why the show moved… it was for no other reason than that the repeat of Peston on Sunday on Sunday nights was watched by twice as many people as the morning live show”. We have been promised a stellar line-up of politicians, experts and “cultural figures”, while co-presenter Anushka Asthana will help to stir up the studio audience. With Trump in power, Brexit on the horizon and both British major political parties riven by factionalism, there are certainly sufficient topics to sustain several political discussion shows, and Peston remains a tremendously gifted broadcaster with a knack for communicating complex issues with clarity.
