Enough Said (2013)

FILM4, 7.10PM ★★★★

 This sun-warmed comedy of Los Angeles manners is written and directed by Nicole Holofcener. It centres on Eva, a masseuse played by a gloriously on-form Julia Louisdreyfus, whose daughter is about to fly the nest, and who meets Albert (the late James Gandolfini) at a garden party. The film contains Gandolfini’s final lead role, but his performance is cherishably inconclusive: easy, open and insisting on nothing. The China Syndrome (1979)

MOVIES4MEN, 9.00PM ★★★★

 A riveting if somewhat right-on drama in which two journalists (Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas) attempt to expose dangerous faults and corporate corruption at a nuclear power plant in Los Angeles; Jack Lemmon plays an engineer trying to help them. Fonda, Lemmon and the writers were Oscar-nominated. Spooky fact: weeks after the film’s release came the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island.

Experiment Perilous (1944, b/w) BBC FOUR, 10.25PM ★★★

 Screen siren Hedy Lamarr stars in Jacques Tourneour’s thriller. At the turn of the 20th century, Dr Bailey (George Brent) meets an old woman on the train, who is on the way to visit her brother Nick and his wife. He then hears that she has died under mysterious circumstances. When Bailey meets the old woman’s family, he falls for Nick’s wife (Lamarr) and plans to free her from her obsessive husband’s grip.
