Cycle number plates

-

SIR – I think the families of those injured or killed by cyclists, of whom there seem to be an increasing number, will welcome the new policy at Stanley Park High in Carshalton to make children display number plates if they wish to cycle to and from the school (report, September 26).

Training for responsible cycling has to start early. Currently we have too many cyclists riding on non-cyling pavements, speeding across traffic lights and riding against one-way systems. It is not helpful for public figures like Duncan Dollimore of Cycling UK or Chris Boardman, the former professional cyclist, to challenge measures that aim to prevent such behaviour.

I doubt the school’s new rules will put children off cycling, but they could save lives in the future. S C Mccarthy
