Not the knot
SIR – When I was a National Serviceman in the Fifties we were forbidden to use the Windsor knot (Letters, September 26). I thought this was a pity as it is more symmetrical.
I assumed that this ban was due to antipathy towards the presumed inventor, and loyalty to his reigning brother on the part of the Army hierarchy.

SIR – James Bond would “never trust a man who wears a Windsor knot”.
It is hard to imagine the Duke of Edinburgh losing sleep over such nonsense.
