Licensed bicycles

SIR – As a Cambridge undergraduate in the early Sixties, I was required to display a registration number on my bicycle (Letters, September 28).

I am not sure what the purpose was, but it certainly never felt like a restriction on my freedom. Professor Geoffrey Sampson
