I’ve gone Gaga over a new Star
This week, I went to see A Star is Born, the 21st-century remake of the musical that has been helmed by both Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand.
Lady Gaga is in the starring role this time as Ally, alongside Bradley Cooper, who plays rock star Jackson Maine (Ally doesn’t get a surname
– she’s that much of a star).
It is almost unbearably cheesy; the fromage offset by a strange undercurrent of darkness.
I loved it, of course, and only stopped crying yesterday.
The tale, of a young, struggling waitress whisked off in a private jet by a millionaire rock star, is the stuff of every woman’s teenage fantasies – not that we’d ever like to admit it.
So while I am sure it will be popular to mock this Hollywood remake, you can bet your bottom dollar that Jackson and Ally will become this generation’s Jack and Rose.
A movie bigger than the Titanic that comes with an incredibly sentimental soundtrack? Resistance, I promise you, is futile.
