Javid: I was cornered by five police chiefs and my brother

- By Harry Yorke POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

SAJID JAVID has admitted police need more funding as he revealed that his brother and five police bosses “cornered” him at a recent conference to give him a “no holds-barred” account of the reality on the front-line.

Amid a surge of violent crime, the Home Secretary said Chief Supt Bas Javid, his brother, had pressed upon him the challenges facing front-line officers as he called for a more joinedup approach in tackling violent crime.

The disclosure comes ahead of Mr Javid’s keynote speech tomorrow, when he will call for a “public health” approach to crime, calling for violence to be treated like a contagious disease. Police officers, teachers, social workers and council staff will be placed under a new “statutory duty” to ensure they prioritise the approach.

He told Chronicle Live: “Resources are an issue. I accept that. When it comes to West Midlands Police, I get a bit of insight from my own brother, who is in the force.

“I recently went to Coventry for a superintendents’ association conference. My brother was there and at the end of my speech, he cornered me with five other chief superintendents and they gave me a real no holds-barred view of what’s going on on the streets.”

♦ London will be given “New York levels of policing” with 2,000 extra officers if Shaun Bailey beats Sadiq Khan in the capital’s mayoral elections in two years, the Tory told The Daily Telegraph.
