Sherlock Holmes (2009) ITV2, 9.00PM ★★★

Mockney mini-maestro Guy Ritchie turns his hand to Sherlock Holmes in this energetic and explosive reworking of Conan Doyle’s sleuth – which predates the Benedict Cumberbatch phenomenon. Robert Downey Jr is a wry delight in the title role, Jude Law makes a reliable and witty Dr Watson, and Mark Strong hams it up as the evil Lord Blackwood. As usual, Ritchie totally overdoes the flash; still, it’s fun flash more often than not.

Ocean’s Thirteen (2007) SKY ONE, 9.00PM ★★★

George Clooney and Brad Pitt reprise their roles as slick con-artists for the third instalment in Steven Soderbergh’s playful, if slightly smug, trilogy of heist comedies. As in the first film, we’re (predictably) back in Las Vegas. This one is also, as usual, a devilishly complex affair, but – in brief – its revenge-driven plot follows Danny Ocean and his team as they try to finagle millions of dollars out of Al Pacino’s hotel developer.

Blades of Glory (2007) BBC ONE, 11.45PM; NI/WALES, 12.10AM; SCOT, 12.40AM ★★★★

You might think that the sequinned world of figure skating is beyond parody, but Will Ferrell and Jon Heder serve up a zestfully preposterous success. They play rival ice skaters, Ferrell a loose cannon and Heder a prissy perfectionist, who are slung out of the sport but return as an all-male pairing. On paper it’s predictable; on screen it’s funny, sharp, and maybe even a little charming.
