Hot ash Now it’s Soputan
In a stark reminder of Indonesia’s vulnerability to natural disasters, the Soputan volcano in Sulawesi erupted yesterday, spewing volcanic ash up to 12,000ft above the crater. No evacuations were ordered but authorities warned planes about volcanic ash. It was unclear if the eruption was accelerated by Friday’s earthquake. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and Soputan is one of the most active volcanoes on the island.
