SIR – With the rather advance announcement of Archbishop John Sentamu’s retirement (report, October 2) and speculation on his successor at York, might one hope that the Holy Spirit be given an opportunity to express a preference, or is gender partiality now a prerequisite for consideration of preferment within the Church of England?
