William Morris & Co for H&M
What would William Morris have made of H&M’S new William Morris project? On the one hand he would have had a few ethical issues with the mass production side of things. On the other, he was very workers-of-the-world-unite, so would have appreciated the affordable prices. On the third hand (say that of his wife Jane, who adored nice clothes), he would have felt a twinge of guilt at encouraging us to buy yet more stuff. On the fourth, he would surely have found – given that all the prints come from his own archives – that this capsule lives up to his famous maxim about having nothing in your house you neither believe to be beautiful nor know to be useful. Bottom line: this is lovely, although you may not actually need it.
