Inaudible creakiness

SIR – The creaky voice mentioned by David Ellis (Letters, October 9) has long been known as the Californian Croak. I first became aware of it when I found Buffy the Vampire Slayer impossible to watch without subtitles.

I was in my early sixties when it started to trouble me, so I suspect it is associated with hearing loss. It would be interesting to know if this problem is suffered by the younger generation. George Peddie
