Pumpkins beat plastic

SIR – The annual letter (October 10) about pumpkins not being eaten rather misses the point. A hollowed-out pumpkin is a singleuse product but, unlike Christmas wrapping paper or Easter-egg boxes, it is biodegradable and renewable.

It provides a living for growers in this country and avoids importing plastic substitutes. Michael Keene
