No more prisoners to be executed in Malaysia

-

Malaysia is to abolish the death penalty and will halt all pending executions, the government announced yesterday.

More than 1,200 death row prisoners will no longer face the hangman’s noose following a groundswell of opposition to capital punishment. Executions were mandatory for crimes including murder, drug trafficking, kidnapping and possession of firearms.

Human Rights Watch said the decision was “fabulous news”.
