PICKERING’S PERFECT PICKS

-

The coat: It should be soft and quite capacious. I like to layer jumpers underneath in winter and wear it on its own when the weather’s milder. The better the fabric, the less likely it is to need a lining, which makes it feel more like a cardigan, which I love,

Recycled down puffer, £175 (arket.com)

The jacket: I love an army jacket, but it has to be top quality, medium weight, and roomy so that you can wear jumpers beneath it. I also love cord for its durability and smartness. Trousers:

I’ve got very skinny legs so the fit can be tricky. I like jeans in a thick denim, with very little or no stretch, which makes them look more like a tailored trouser, and I love cords because they strike the right balance between utilitarian and function. Corduroy blazer, £295, and trousers, £175 (brora.co.uk)

The shirt: I have a roster of white cotton styles, from Celine to Cos, from ultra plain to those with subtle details. Oversized trumps tight every time. Buttons are key: too high and they look prim, too low and you flash your bra.

The dress: I like dresses to be cut loosely so that I can wear them very casually or belted. Isabel Marant does great ones, which have the faintest Boho feel that means they’re easy to dress up or down whatever the occasion. Isabel Marant floral midi dress, £930 (brownsfashion. com)

The shoes: I love Nike’s Flyknits. I have the perfect pair in khaki, which go with everything and look smart. But I also love velvet slippers and loafers. I have a black Chanel pair with gold latticework that I like to wear with jeans, but I also love Penelope Chilvers.
