Fireworks display on Thames is called off to keep stranded Benny the beluga whale safe

- By Daily Telegraph Reporter

A FIREWORKS display on the Thames has been cancelled because of fears for the welfare of a stranded beluga whale.

The whale, named Benny by locals, has become a popular attraction since it was first sighted last month in the river by Gravesend in Kent, thousands of miles from its normal habitat in the far north.

Now Gravesham Council has called off its annual fireworks display, which was to take place on a barge in the river, amid fears that it could be too distressing for Benny.

Council leader David Turner said: “Following advice from the Port of London Authority, we have decided to postpone the Gravesham Fireworks this year.

“While we are very disappointed, we understand the need to keep Benny safe must take priority.

“Every effort will be made to reschedule this hugely popular event, but a decision cannot be made now as no one knows how long Benny will remain in residence here.

“We have to ensure that our special visitor is kept safe and well.”

The council, which was told that disturbing Benny would be in breach of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, has also urged residents to think twice about having private fireworks parties near the river and has labelled its mission #Keepbennysafe.

Meanwhile, one of the UK’S most senior police officers has said the sale of fireworks to individuals should be banned.

Ian Hopkins, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, yesterday called for a change in the law to ensure that pyrotechnics could no longer be used by young people to “terrorise” communities.

“We cannot go and purchase a weapon – the sale of knives is being restricted,” the chief constable told BBC Radio Manchester.

“The time has come to do the same around fireworks.”
