Hunt pressures Saudis over Khashoggi death
JEREMY HUNT will today confront the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia to express his “horror and outrage” over the “brutal” murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
The Foreign Secretary will become the first minister to meet with Mohammed bin Salman since Mr Khashoggi, a journalist with The Washington Post, was allegedly tortured and executed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month. In the kingdom for a meeting with King Salman and the Crown Prince, Mr Hunt will demand that they do more to cooperate with the Turkish authorities’ inquiry into the killing.
It comes amid pressure on Theresa May to break off economic ties with Riyadh, which is accused of involvement in the killing. Faced with questions about his own involvement, the Crown Prince attempted to distance himself, describing the murder as “repulsive”.
Mr Hunt will call on Saudi Arabia to answer mounting questions over its alleged involvement, and demand that it “do more” to deliver “justice and accountability for the Khashoggi family”.
“The international community remain united in horror and outrage at the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi,” Mr Hunt said last night. “It is clearly unacceptable that the full circumstances ... still remain unclear. We encourage the Saudi authorities to cooperate fully with the Turkish investigation into his death.”
