Royal Mail strikes a seasonal chord with singing postboxes

- By Sarah Lumley

SINGING postboxes are to be introduced to the UK by Royal Mail in time for Christmas.

The four Christmasthemed postboxes will be unveiled in four cities this week. They will serenade people whenever a card or letter is posted through the slot.

Decorated with seasonal snowflake stickers and a white, snowy top, the postboxes will respond to cards being posted by playing one of a selection of Christmasthemed jingles.

The three tunes include the sound of sleigh bells, a jolly season’s greeting from Father Christmas, and a short, Christmas-themed melody.

The postboxes will be set up in busy tourist spots in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, and will remain in place throughout December to celebrate the festive season.

The themed boxes are a first for Royal Mail, which said it is looking forward to spreading a little Christmas cheer to people sending cards to loved ones.

Simon Barker, operations director at Royal Mail, said: “Delivering Christmas is our absolute priority this December.

“In the process, we enjoy any way we can add a little extra fun and festivity to posting Christmas cards this year.”

Postbox users are being encouraged by Royal Mail to snap selfies while posting their cards and letters in the singing boxes, and share them on social media using the hashtag #festivepostbox.

The company will then share its favourite photographs across its official social media accounts.
