Korea TV chief quits over bad behaviour of daughter, 10

- By Julian Ryall in Tokyo

THE president of a South Korean television company has resigned in the wake of a public outcry over his 10-year-old daughter’s abusive behaviour towards his chauffeur.

Bang Jung-oh, the head of the TV Chosun cable network, apologised for his child’s conduct and announced he would quit after a recording of the girl’s threats was released by the rival MBC TV channel.

“I express deep regret for causing the public trouble related to my child,” Mr Bang said. “I apologise sincerely to the chauffeur for his distress.”

In the audio clip, the girl, who has not been named, is heard shouting at the driver: “Hey, you! I’ll speak to my mother today to make you lose your job. You’re fired.” She adds: “You’re really insane. Hey, I’m speaking to you.”

After a long silence, the driver can be heard replying: “Fire me if you want.”

The girl yells back, “Do you think I would be embarrassed? You’re crippled. Crippled without arms, legs, face, ears or a mouth. You’re insane. Your parents taught you wrong. I really hate you. I want you to die. That’s my wish.”

The chauffeur reported the girl’s comments to her parents but he was sacked the following day.

He told MBC: “I expected the mother would console me with an apology and warm words, but that was not the case.”

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with critics saying the heads of the nation’s family-run conglomerates are “living in the Dark Ages”.

In 2015, Cho Hyun-ah, 44, the daughter of Korean Air’s chief executive, was sentenced to one year in prison for delaying a plane because she flew into a rage with cabin crew who had served her nuts in a bag and not on a plate.
